The Barbie fashion movement sets its sights on dominating the literary world next.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie reintroduced the color pink into the conversation with a smorgasbord of adorable and chic doll-inspired wardrobe pieces. Alongside stylist Andrew Mukamal, Margot Robbie sought to showcase the Barbiecore fashion phenomenon during every appearance on the Barbie press tour. Most recently, Mukamal dressed Robbie for the Golden Globes in a custom Armani dress inspired by the 1977 Superstar Barbie.
Now her looks will forever be immortalized in one epic coffee table book, Barbie™: The World Tour.
Mukamal broke the news in an Instagram post, revealing the book was “an idea I had in my living room when I started dreaming about Margot’s wardrobe for the Barbie press tour in March 2023. I could have never imagined just a few months later, we’d be in the studio shooting this project with the team of our dreams.”
The stylist went on to thank Robbie for her “unwavering faith and confidence” in a project that he calls a labor of love for both Barbie fans and fashion enthusiasts alike.
Published by Rizzoli, the photo book description states the book showcases “Barbie’s most iconic outfits and curated vintage pieces,” sharing with us the many looks inspired by the doll’s history that never made it to the red carpet due to the SAG strike. “Margot and Andrew worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Streamline luggage at the airport, and beyond.”
The book will also feature “original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel’s Barbie fashion archives, and the designers’ sketches and Polaroids from fittings.” As well as a foreword by Edward Enninful, an introduction by Margaret Zhang, and an afterword by Greta Gerwig.
The 160-page project hopes to capture 65 years of fashion history through Barbie’s lens with a chic collage of high-fashion pieces that imbues the same fabulous fun as Barbie Land.
Barbie™: The World Tour arrives March 19, 2024, and will retail for $55 USD ($75 CDN).
